It’s hard to comprehend the amount of change happening in the earth right now.
What I mean, is among people, change is occurring.

Certainly, in the church, change is happening.
In many messages, I’ve spoken about the “falling away” that is taking place right now.

We know from scripture that a falling away will take place, we see it happening, if we are awake to it; but why are people falling away from faith?

When we’ve known the way to life…
When we’ve lived for Christ for years and years…
When we’ve grown up in Christianity, and in the church…
Why is it that some of the most resilient, strong, deeply rooted people seem to be falling away?

We see it most commonly among leaders, simply because of their higher profile.
They are more visible.
Over the past two years, I can’t even count the number of leaders that I’ve seen fall off the deep end and go into complete error spiritually.

Some would say, “don’t judge,” but when you see someone make a complete flip in everything they’ve ever taught, said, or believed, it’s hard to not take notice.

But then I ask myself, “how do I keep from falling away myself?”

What is the remedy?
What happened in each person’s life that caused them to deviate from everything they once knew, loved, practiced, and believed?

Paul says…

Galatians 1:3-9 NKJV
[3] Grace to you and peace from God the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ, [4] who gave Himself for our sins, that He might deliver us from this present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, [5] to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen. [6] I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel, [7] which is not another; but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ. [8] But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed(which means doomed to destruction). [9] As we have said before, so now I say again, if anyone preaches any other gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed.

That is very strong language.
It denotes the seriousness of what we believe and receive.
This short passage brings us warning of what MIGHT HAPPEN, if we are not careful.

Paul is showing us that it is entirely possible for someone to begin CHANGING the message into another message. It usually happens a little at a time and with subtlety.

He declares it is possible that even some angel (actually a demon) may appear to some and try to preach a different Jesus.

Open your eyes church! We are most likely about to see some crazy things transpire, and some people claim some crazy new ideas…Paul is warning us!

I wonder, when I see people fall away from the faith in what they’ve always known, if they remember passages like this one.
Have they forgotten the warnings of scripture?

What it boils down to is plain old deception.
They become deceived and they change.
They trade the truth for something that is NOT the truth.

Furthermore, Paul declares that it can, and will happen!

2 Corinthians 11:1-4 NKJV
[1] Oh, that you would bear with me in a little folly-and indeed you do bear with me. [2] For I am jealous for you with godly jealousy. For I have betrothed you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ.

In other words, he wants them to stay in the pure, undefiled faith in Jesus Christ.
Paul wants to present them holy, and above reproach, not mingling worldly ideas, and concocting new beliefs that actually war against faith.

[3] But I fear, lest somehow, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, so your minds may be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.

There is a reason that he is warning us.

The reason is because we are not immune to the deception of the enemy, and we must guard our heart and mind in order to keep out the things the enemy would seek to plant inside us…these enemy seeds alway lead to a deceived mind, and a deceived mind is a captured mind!

[4] For if he who comes preaches another Jesus whom we have not preached, or if you receive a different spirit which you have not received, or a different gospel which you have not accepted-you may well put up with it!

This is what we see taking place. The church is putting up with teachings, and beliefs that are leading the people of God down a road to deception.

We must hold on tightly to what we know.
Deception is subtle, and it often occurs in the void between what we know, and what we hear around us.

Scripture even goes so far as to warn us of this.
Hosea 4:6 declares, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.”

If we don’t know something is dangerous, we won’t stay away from it.
Also, if we don’t know the truth about Jesus, from the WORD OF GOD, we won’t cling to it.

I’m challenging you right now to hear what I’m saying…

We’ve seen many stories in the Old Testament, which are written for our example, where the people turned away from the truth and even belittled or persecuted those who continued to hold onto the truth.

For example…
In Sodom, Lot and his family were among people who were totally depraved from the truth, and they tried to sway Lot and even to harm him for not coming alongside their error.

SO what are we supposed to do to protect ourselves?
How do we keep from falling?

Here’s what the Bible says…

Hebrews 2:1 NKJV
[1] Therefore we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away.
We have to pay attention to the truth we know.
We have to earnestly LISTEN to scripture for ourselves.
We have to earnestly SEEK the voice of God for ourselves.
When we KNOW something is true, don’t let go of it.

What does it mean to drift?
It simply means to float away from the place we used to be.
When you drift, it happens fairly slowly, and often you won’t even recognize the drift at first.

So what is a cure for drift?
Anchor yourself.

Hebrews 6:13-19 NKJV
[13] For when God made a promise to Abraham, because He could swear by no one greater, He swore by Himself, [14] saying, “Surely blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply you.” [15] And so, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise. [16] For men indeed swear by the greater, and an oath for confirmation is for them an end of all dispute. [17] Thus God, determining to show more abundantly to the heirs of promise the immutability of His counsel, confirmed it by an oath, [18] that by two immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we might have strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold of the hope set before us. [19] This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which enters the Presence behind the veil,

Jesus is our anchor.
Jesus is the WORD MADE FLESH.
The word of God is our anchor and hope.

The surest way to anchor to Jesus is to stay close to him through scripture.
Don’t just THINK you know what the Bible says, study it for yourself, and find out what it says.

Don’t just TAKE SOMEONE’S WORD FOR IT, read it for yourself, and find the truth in its pages.

If you are anchored to scripture and it becomes your lifeline, it will be nearly impossible to drift away or fall away from truth.

Nearly every person who has fallen away from truth, did it, because they listened to someone else’s opinion about what scripture says.

I’m encouraging you to FIND OUT FOR YOURSELF what scripture says and allow Holy Spirit to speak to YOUR HEART FOR HIMSELF.

The writer of Hebrews gives us more truth when he says…

Hebrews 3:12 NKJV
[12] Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God;

Unbelief creeps in when we unhook from the anchor of our soul, which is Jesus through his word.
Unhooking or untethering from your anchor ALWAYS LEADS TO DRIFTING.

Let me tell you another secret…
Having the Truth inside your heart and mind will keep you afloat.

My boys and I love to swim.
We love the deep end of the pool.
We love to jump in.

I love to practice floating in the deep water.
Over the years I’ve learned, that for me, I can float with just my head above water and my whole body hanging down under the water.
Here’s how you float…take in as much air as you possibly can with every breath. Take in your deep breaths quickly and hold them as long as you can. Don’t fight the water. Be still.

Here’s what I’m saying…
As long as the truth of God’s word is FILLING YOUR HEART AND MIND, you will not sink!
As long as you don’t try to fight with the water, you won’t sink.
God’s word in your heart will keep you above the deception and allow you the chance to swim to shore.

• This is the time to stay closer to Jesus than we’ve ever been.
• This is the time to ACTUALLY READ THE BIBLE for ourself, not just to rely on other people’s explanation of it.
• This is the time to pray and seek the Lord more than ever.

I pray all the time, “Lord, don’t let me be deceived or fall away from the truth.”

I pray all the time, “Lord, help me to hear your voice.”

Church, Remnant Prayer Warriors, now is the time for each believer to protect themselves from the deception that is filling up our culture. It is getting deeper and deeper with each passing day. None of us is immune to the threat of deception, but we have the knowledge of how to stay anchored to the truth.

Here’s what the Bible says…

2 Thessalonians 3:1-5 NKJV
[1] Finally, brethren, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may run swiftly and be glorified, just as it is with you, [2] and that we may be delivered from unreasonable and wicked men; for not all have faith. [3] But the Lord is faithful, who will establish you and guard you from the evil one. [4] And we have confidence in the Lord concerning you, both that you do and will do the things we command you. [5] Now may the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God and into the patience of Christ.

Let me finish with two more verses of scripture…

James 5:7-8 NKJV
[7] Therefore be patient, brethren, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, waiting patiently for it until it receives the early and latter rain. [8] You also be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand.

Last of all, I want to echo the Words of the Apostle Peter…I am feeling the press of these words in my preaching more than ever before.

2 Peter 1:12 NKJV
[12] For this reason I will not be negligent to remind you always of these things, though you know and are established in the present truth.

Hold on to what you know, and hold on with all your might.

Larry Shankle

My heart is for the church that Jesus is building and returning for...the church that the gates of hell will not prevail against.
More than anything, the desire of my heart is to see the greatest revival of the Holy Spirit, salvations, spiritual awakening, and for the miraculous to come back to the church, preparing believers for the return of Jesus.
